Gold Panning | Montana’s Missouri River Country

Gold Panning

There’s gold in them hills! Now a town of around 70 people, Zortman, Montana, was once a booming mining town nestled under the Little Rocky Mountains. In 1868, close to 2,000 men arrived in Zortman when gold was discovered by Pike Landusky and Dutch Louie. The local mines in Zortman included the Alabama Mine, the Ruby Mine, and the Little Ben Mine, which produced an estimated $125 million in gold before the 1950s. The mines are no longer operational, but there is still trace amounts of gold to be found surrounding town. Rent gold panning equipment (or bring your own) and mine for gold in the creeks surrounding town.
